Phil Germakian: M.S.Ed., C.S.C.S. (Strength & Conditioning Coach)

If you are new to trail running, an experienced runner yearning to explore more trails and mountains, tackle your first marathon or ultramarathon, or simply want to get fit and healthy by spending more time outside moving your body, then you have come to the right place.  Phil is a life-long athlete, and a competitive runner for 15 years.  He ran his first 5k race in 2007, and has been hooked on the sport ever since, quickly moving up in distance and building his endurance through road races, triathlons, and the Mountain-Ultra-Trail racing scene.  Phil has finished over 75 races from 1 mile to 62 miles (100k) in distance over the years, with many top 10 results, multiple podium finishes, and even a few wins!  Also, his 15 years of experience as an educator teaching & coaching people of all ages, has helped Phil develop a passion for helping people achieve their goals.

Training Philosophy:

I believe in a balanced training approach that integrates the development of speed, strength, and endurance; resulting in a well-rounded athlete who is more resilient and less injury prone.  By incorporating a variety of training stimuli, such as: running on different surfaces, distances, speeds, grades, and developing strength through all planes of motion, will all help stress your body differently to allow for continued progress.  Following the simple formula of STRESS + REST = GROWTH, and learning how to listen to your body will go a long way in producing both a safe and positive training experience that results in you achieving your desired goals.

Above all, I just plain love running, especially in the mountains, and want to help people live a healthier and more active lifestyle.  My coaching practice focuses on the big picture. My goal for the athletes I work with is to improve their quality of life by helping them develop a lasting fitness practice focused on longevity in sport and in health.   As a coach, I prioritize growth and development, with the goal of helping those I work with improve themselves to become both better people and stronger athletes.

Here are my PR’s at some of the standard road and trail race distances.

Athlete Testimonials:

Josh racing the 2018 Red Hot 55K in Moab, Utah.

“Phil coached me for 4 months as I trained for the Red Hot 55k. I wanted to take my training to the next level and remain consistent. Phil definitely helped me with that by creating a customized training plan to fit my needs. The results showed in my race, as I got a personal best in the 50k distance. I highly recommend working with Phil for all of your coaching needs!”

Joey ridge running at our 2019 Singletrack Explorers Camp!

“After having one of the best weeks of my life at the Singletrack Explorers summer camp, I asked Phil to coach me for my next 50k. Under his guidance, I was able to obtain my first top ten 50k finish along with a strong finish at my first 50 miler the following month.  Before coaching, almost all of my runs were at a steady state and probably paced too hard.  The addition of hard run workouts, easy runs and bodyweight exercises, in Phil’s program, has led to me being a much stronger runner.  I am excited to continue working with Phil during the buildup to my first 100k in 2020.”
